HTC EVO 4G, Froyo 2.2 Final release, Unrevoked3 and ROOT

Sprint and HTC released Froyo today as an over-the-air update to all of you out there that haven’t already rooted your phone.  Well, my EVO was rooted within the first 48 hours of me owning the phone.  I recently dropped back to the stock unrooted image only to use Unrevoked3 to root it again.

By having a rooted phone, I can’t get the Froyo update over the air, but I can still put it on my phone, and you can too.  Here’s how to do it.

Step 0: I’m adding this late, but if you don’t want to have to search for your apps again, check out AppBrain.  Install it before the upgrade, sync your phone up with the website, create a new list on the website and copy all your apps to that as a backup.  After you are done with the upgrade, install AppBrain first and sync it back up.  All your apps will be there waiting for you.

Step 1: You need to have a phone rooted with Unrevoked3.  That’s the way I know how to go about it, so go root your phone with Unrevoked3 and come back.

Step 2: Download the rooted Froyo image from here. (Thanks netarchy!!!)

Step 3: Copy the .zip file to the root of your SD card on the phone.

Step 4: Power down the phone and reboot into the boot loader. To do this, make sure the power is off and hold the volume down button while holding down the power button.

Step 5: Once in the boot loader, use the volume rocker to navigate to RECOVERY. Select it by pressing the power button. This will bring you to Clockwork.

Step 6: From ClockworkMod Recovery, select ” wipe data/factory reset”.  Confirm it and do the reset.

Step 7: Select “install zip from sdcard”, then “choose zip from sdcard”.

Step 8: Navigate to and select “HTC-OTA-3.26.651.6-Final-Froyo-Rooted-Odexed-netarchy-signed.zip”. Confirm the install.

Step 9: Once the install is done, navigate back to the top level of Clockwork and select “reboot system now”.

And you’re done!  You should now reboot into Froyo. You can verify this by going to Settings -> About Phone -> Software information.  You should see “Android Version 2.2″ at the very top!

Once you have updated Froyo, you need to apply a couple of radio updates.  You do this the same way you installed the Froyo zip file.  After each install, reboot the phone and let it do a full reboot.  After it’s rebooted, power down and boot into the boot loader to apply the other one.  Follow the instructions above (you don’t have to wipe data for the radio updates) and you’ll be just fine.  Here are those two files:

Radio update: 2.15.00.07.28

Wimax Update 26023

Enjoy the speed of Froyo and have fun with your newly rooted phone! For the full thread on xda, click here.

Update: I’ve seen a HUGE spike in traffic in the last hour (that’s to be expected) and I can see that a lot of you guys are doing the upgrade (I love Woopra).  Leave some comments below and let me know if everything ran OK for you.

So can I recover my nandroid with this method?

  • http://www.gregoryledet.com Greg Ledet

    I''m not sure, I haven't tried it because I don't use nandroid.

  • Uscpeter11215

Its come in handy in the past, great for lazily recovering phone settings, apps, etc. after some random ROM crashes you whole system. I have just always used it on 2.1 but since it backs up sense and all and I mean all settings not sure if it will bork the 2.2 install. Guess just best to back up apps and go the long way.

  • Uscpeter11215

The file wont show up in the root of sd card when I go to boot from sd card. Weird.

  • http://www.gregoryledet.com Greg Ledet

That is weird… It worked fine for me on 4 phones so far.

  • Kwitcom

I have running this version for almost 20 hours now and seems to be running without issue.

my phone has started restarting frequently on its own since i flashed these files anyway to fix this … i restored my nand and i still have the same problem since the update…

I haven't run into that issue with those images, but I would verify the images to make sure they haven't been altered in any way. The MD5 Checksums are

what happen if froyo was already installed in my evo, how do i get it back to 2.1 to root

  • ime180

    Hi,
I apologize for being novice at tha. I have gotten an Evo 3.26 from Best buy yesterday. I am trying to root it, in order to get free Hotspot, is it possible to do without damaging the phone, and if so, where could I get the instructions how to do that?thanks

    NO BRICK

I am a nervous guy when it comes to this stuff, but I follow directions well. The update worked just as it said it would and was pretty easy. I had already used Unrevoked to root the phone.

The only part that hung me up for a while is that nobody ever tells you that when you mount your phone and choose to use it as a drive, that the first place you enter is the root of the SD card. I know you tech guys know that, but I wanted to be sure. I watched a how to video on Youtube and sure enough, that was the root area. Other than that, easy.

  • Wuud52

BTW, I think some people actually look for a folder called root vs. putting the file in the root area of the SD card which is not labeled “Root”. I think this throws some people off. Again, mine worked as expected, but the root thing got me hung for a while.

I love this post because it’s quite informative. I’m running into an error I cannot figure out, can anyone help me? When installing the zip file, I get the following error:
    E: Can’t symlink /system/xbin/zcip
    E: Failure at line 60:
    symlink busybox SYSTEM:xbin/zcip
    Installation aborted.

I have already wiped data/factory reset, and I don’t know what to do at this point. Using HTC Incredible. I have rooted the system with unrevoked, and never updated to froyo. Can anyone offer some help?

Let’s start with this… Did you try to use the ROM from here? If so, you’re all fucked up. The ROM from here is for the EVO 4G only.

Secondly, the OTA Froyo for your phone is due next month. Wait a few weeks and someone will root the image.

Oh yes, this is what I’ve been waiting for. Thanks for the help! I hope you will post exciting imformation more.

I get the following error and it aborts.

Installing Update….Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer suppported.   Amend scripting was deprecated by Google in Android 1.5.It was necessary to remove it when updating to the ClockworkMod 3.o Gingerbread based recovery.  Please switch to Edify scripting (updates-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages.  Installation aborted.
